Looking and Seeing: Assignment: Color
21 April
I started reading the book when I was in Japan, but didn’t have much chance to shoot. I then tried picking up the book and shooting exercises a few weeks later in Tbilisi, but it was difficult to stay focused on the assignments when I had only a few days to explore the city. Now that I’m back in Dubai and with no projects on the horizon, I’d like to complete this text and the exercises. So this afternoon I reviewed my notes and set out on the first assignment, color. I did so in my immediate neighborhood on SZR, but venturing a little bit further afield than usual. I followed the suggested procedure by setting my intent (seeing for color), synchronizing my experience (mindfulness of the body in space and the experience of the phenomenal world), and being sensitive to flashes of perception. What I found was restlessness - wanting to find images - and a repeated interest in objects rather than color. It wasn’t until about 45 minutes to an hour into my 90 minute walk that I found I had forgotten about finding images. I was simply engaged in my experience of walking and looking. I will try again Friday and Saturday. I haven’t yet looked at my images. I plan to hold them until next week so as not to get caught up in creating images but focusing more on the process of being with the camera.

Contemplative Photography: Color 3
I’m wondering how much longer I ought to focus on color. I had a chance to walk a bit through Qusais and managed a couple of interesting shots, one emphasizing color and form (the guy at the ATM), the other the quality of light (the eyeglasses). Perhaps I can do one more round this weekend, and then move on to the next set of exercises.

Contemplative Photography: Color 2
Apart from mom’s holiday, I haven’t done any shooting since the first CP color shoot about a month ago. I was sick this past week so didn’t do a thing but work and sleep. This weekend I finally had some energy and went for a haircut and then walked around Satwa for a bit trying to shoot color. What I noticed most is how out of practice I felt. There were a couple of good opportunities for portraits, but I just didn’t have the energy to interact with strangers. Again I note that shooting color apart from shape or contrast is difficult and rather uninteresting.

Contemplative Photography: Color Assignment 1
The work begins in Chapter 5 with a focus on color. The challenge is ignoring colorful objects, to avoid the process of labeling in order to concentrate on color.
I did two walk-arounds on campus on two different days, one inside, one out, each about 45 minutes. I did this during exam week when there were few students about, so it was easy to move slowly and look without being interrupted or worrying about being seen.
I noticed that while color by itself may be visible, it is nearly impossible to photograph. An image requires texture or form, and what most often makes a color attractive is contrast - one color against another.
If you shoot nothing but color, you end up with color swatches.
These and future images can be viewed in an album at Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/80283129@N03/albums/72157663263927130
